What can we compare the american film market to in the roman empire, culture wise?

Hollywood is the movie capital of the world, we could compare this industry with what during the roman times? For example the gladiators with boxing, but that is sports and movies are cultural.

The "circuses" portion of the Bread and Circuses formula the emperors used to distract the population.

Gladiator fights were NOT sport, they were an important part of Roman culture and represented the martial spirit and military successes of the Romans’ own ancestors and history. Chariot races and the Olympic Games were sports for the Romans – boxing was a popular sport in its own right in the Roman empire – and the gladiator shows were entertainment provided to distract people from the realities of everyday life, like Hollywood movies today.
