What do you think about consumer reports surveys about Mercedes-Benz?

CR rates them as basically the worst cars next to Land Rover even the new S-class, I never here this from Benz owners.

I am a true believer of taking care of your cars will last you forever. I drive US build cars. Never failed me. Of course, they is maintenance that has to be performed and I do it ASAP. I listen to the car when some seems to be out of the ordinary and take care of it fast. I have an 03 Impala with over 80,000 on it. I took it to a shop for an oil change, the mechanics can not believe the car is that old with that mileage. I drove a 94 Grand Prix for over 160,000 trouble free miles for about 13 years. My dad bought an 85 Audi 5000S when they came brand new. I was on top of it, once I left the house and went on my own, my dad (a gas and go type person) called me saying the car was messed up. He drove the crap out of it and neglected all maintenance. The car was pretty much beat up.

When someone tells me that Ball Joints has to be replaced, I pretty much know that car has been abused. On my Grand Prix on 13 years of ownership, never replaced a ball joint nor suspension dampers (aka Shocks Absorbers). Is a matter of fact, never had to replace one except the worst car I ever had (Honda Prelude).

What I am trying to say is, some people buy these cars with no money left to even buy a tire. Is all image, the maintenance is neglected (can not afford or just lazy), takes them to cheap garages, do not replace the parts with reliable ones, tinker with the cars or just abuse the crap out of them. When it breaks is MB’s fault. Well that is on any car !

The only reason why people buy mercedes is because they show they can spend the money on that kind of car. There really is no other benefit. The quality has gone down. If I were to purchase a mercedes it would have to be one of the old ones. You know the tank looking mercedes. I particulally like the old 1970′s roadsters you know the ones that have a soft and hard top. I saw them they look beautiful. Better then the newer ones. You can get a roadster in good condition for like 3 to 4 K!!!!

Why do you believe what Consumer Reports say?http://www.allpar.com/cr.html

If the people you know have been repeat customers of Mercedes-Benz, and they are using the cars for similar purposes that you would, I’d trust their testimony over consumer reports. Think about it too in terms of the availability of service, one of the reasons that cars like land rover and mercedes are consistently ranked poorly in publications like cr is because you are less likely to be able to find convenient service for those cars than for other more common types, should you break down on the highway.

    Hope this helps.

I think that you have to take it with a grain of salt. The Mercedes are great vehicles but when something goes wrong or need routine maintenance it will cost. The new Consumer report has the year by year cost of owning a vehicle I believe the yaris or civic were the lowest and the Range Rover Sport was the highest. . Take a look at that and see those numbers are something you can live with.

I worked for Mercedes and in 2006 they were leading the list with the most cars that had to be recalled for unexpected service. Once they had to repair 1.3 million e-classes because the breaks were not working the way they should.
I also had 2 mercs myself. first a C class sportscoupe which was fine and then the regular c class wich i returned after just 4 month. That car just broke all the time and the service is not just expensive, its also slow and unfriendly. I also had a Range Rover before, that was a way better car i ahve to say.

Now i drive a Subaru. Here you can read some more.

I’m on my 5th Benz and I can’t forsee ever buying another brand. It’s not about a CR rating. It’s about loving to drive and wanting the best. I’ve never had any problems with any of mine but I can tell you honestly that I would never consider buying a Honda based upon a CR rating. Either you get it or you don’t. It’s like someone trying to argue that a Timex and a Chopard are both just watches.

Anyway, No, if i want a review I go to TopGear (no bs) because i know from experenice Mercedes have been good to me.

All I can say is that my experience with Mercedes exactly mirrors Consumer’s frequency of repair ratings. My older Benz’s were and continue to be ultra reliable. But my ’99 Benz will be the last Mercedes I buy, until I hear a lot of trustworthy people telling me quality has improved. It just came back from the dealership, after $3500 in miscellaneous repairs, including resealing the differential, replacing the left cat (again), replacing the oxygen sensors, and replacing ball joints, perhaps a few other odds and ends. Ran out of cash, couldn’t fix the A/C. It only has 75000 carefully driven miles, not counting time spent on flatbeds. True story: the 2008 C-Class loaner from the dealer broke down too.

Keep in mind, Consumer Reports must conduct objective research based on road tests and previous statistics. Statistically speaking, Mercedes are not appealing vehicles, mainly due to reliability ratings. Although Mercedes are not the most reliable vehicles on the road, they are by far the best built. Consumer Reports doesn’t put nearly as much emphasis on quality and craftsmanship as they do on reliability or "more bang for your buck". When you buy a Mercedes, you pay a premium for an established name, a better built vehicle, and, quite frankly, a privileged experience. Consumer Reports simply cannot measure these qualities, or the satisfaction one experiences from driving a fine automobile.
