The average worker … The average worker works from Janurary to July just to pay his income taxes. The rest of the year your actually working for yourself. So Really, it’s 40 days in a half a year buying junk you don’t need. I became a Minimalist years ago. If I don’t have the cash to buy something, than I don’t need it, and you will have the cash if you don’t go through life spending half your money on finance charges.
i think part of the … i think part of the problem is the fact that even though the yanks KNOW theres something deeply wrong with their cultute, they really dont have a mature opinion about an alternative, because any other culture is “gobbled up” , chewed, and spat out by their media before average person has a chance to digest it.
Countrywide is FINE … Countrywide is FINE! Bear Stearns is FINE! Fannie and Freddie are FINE! Lehman Bros. is FINE! Washington Mutual is FINE! The U.S. consumer is FINE! The dollar is FINE! $20 per gallon of gas is FINE! Our imploding economy is FINE! The constitution is FINE! U.S. sovereignty is FINE!
man, when I was a … man, when I was a kid we went out to eat like once or twice a month..we always ate at home…and sbux? forget about it, we had that coffee maker that started automatically in the morning, and I always mowed the lawn..it’s called a chore. Did we really get that spoiled?, geez..
Thanks god you got … Thanks god you got it!
After some hundred years of destroing lifestyle, you, americans, are starting to think and live like the rest of the world!!
…can’t belive it…
You nailed it with … You nailed it with your discussion of clutter and how it affects us. I couldn’t agree more! I thought it was just my childhood family that were pack rats…apparently everyone is…at least according to the number of storage rental buildings constantly going up around here. My mother spent hundreds a year to store stuff that, after her death, barely netted half the cost of rental when we sold it. Pathetic!
i think you miss … i think you miss the point though
asides from the fact that in real life it isn’t necessarily the person who worked hardest who gets the coconut
the ideal of socialism, and I amn’t one, is resource based. Lets see what resources we have first then we do what is necessary to feed and clothe everyone that needs fed and clothed, in the process we put everyone in jobs to accomplish this etc. it’s not an immoral foundation for a society based on theft, thats just the way the elite use it
to RevJam’s last … to RevJam’s last comment… even if socialism worked perfectly and capitalism did not work at all, just the fact that I believe people should be free to do what they want with their money… I’ll use the island scenario again: If five people were on an island whatever goods anyone collects should be there’s to keep. Socialism would use muscle to deprive the person who worked the hardest of what he collected that day and distribute it to everyone. That’s bullshit to me. My work…my coconuts.
Please, if you feel the need to comment negatively on what I say, try harder than this.
Stop being so easily offended, I was not talking to you, whoever you are. I was referring to the people in news story. Trust me, they don’t live an apartment.
I will say however, apartment or not, if you were offended you’re probably a gluttonous pile.
it sounds great but … it sounds great but I’m not sure it’s true to life
the jobs change, but not always for the better, the mathematics of economics doesn’t take into account the squidgey maleableness of the human spirit
i think both socialism and free market economics have their merrits and pitfalls as ideologies and unfortunately the powers that be are beating us with nastiest aspects of both their right and left hands
it’s not a liberal … it’s not a liberal statement or a conservative statement, it’s just a statement that i made, it doesn’t need a label or an ideology
Producing takes resources therefor it comes at a cost (google “the story of stuff” it makes food viewing)
“If a bunch of farmers get together and figure out how to produce more goods at less cost then that’s a cool thing”
Sometimes yes and sometimes no, if they drove costs down by using chemicals that did some serious damage we’d have a problem
in our area, … in our area, apartment dwellers, share in a city owned lot to grow crops. ask your city to provide some empty city land. get a group together and get out planting. you have to take initiative. move move move , fast fast fast. sense of urgency in your soul will put food in your bowl.
I think he wanted … I think he wanted to underline the hughe gap existing between people who are frightening at the simple idea of brewing their coffee by themselves instead of buying it and himself who grows most of the food his family eats.
Brewing your own coffee takes not that much effort and personal investment.
The report in the vid was funny: it introduces it as something so hard to achieve. This couple should be offered a medal for their endeavour.
I love how the … I love how the media referred to cutting out a latte from Starbucks, using a slip and slide, and actually cooking your own meals as “draconian”.
“Oh, boo-hoo, we have to brew our own coffee.”
Americans have become a gluttonous pile.
These people will never survive when the economy collapses.
I GROW MOST of what my family eats, you know, in a garden, from the dirt, with seeds.
I sure would hate to have to “cut back” and go to the farmers market.
very liberal … very liberal statement… RevJam.. unless I’m destroying the earth with production… How does producing create destruction? If a bunch of farmers get together and figure out how to produce more goods at less cost then that’s a cool thing, and drives prices down. I’m saying this whole recession business is ridiculous as long as a lower-class income guy like me can still afford to eat out every night.
but in todays … but in todays market revolutionaryJam, we have both cars that are embled by hand for a very expensive price (i.e. rolls, bently etc.) and cars that are not AS good but still great for a much lesser price. When everyone makes more money in a particular country the lower end jobs don’t go away, but change from building a car to working on a movie set, or being a butler in a country that’s well off is probably a great job! The jobs don’t disappear because of robots… they change.
but jchahine… I … but jchahine… I think the whole recession business is based on a myth if just because “sales” are down suddenly there’s a recession. Lack of sales from dept. stores aren’t a good barometer for how much money the consumer has. In fact it’s the opposite really. I mean if sales are down that’s not necesarilly because people are poor… maybe people are just buying less ridiculous stuff they don’t need. recession to me means that people can’t buy the things they need…
Don,
I just … Don,
I just discovered you. Your message may actually save some of the horde of spiritually dead ZOMBIES that make up most of our population, if the time is right. It is sad for me to see the numbers of my fellow man who are TOTALLY OWNED by the people they have bowwoed money from.
Very impressive video.

yes you are right … yes you are right saving is good, but they aren’t saving until they pay off their consumer debts. THEN the economy will pull out of recession as savings grow. BTW the book that you mentioned “Richest Man in Babylon” is excellent, I recommend the audio book on iTunes, it is narrated very well.
Don, I agree the … Don, I agree the consumer is at fault for spending $ that they do not even have. However, the U.S. Govt is spending, or excuse me, [Borrowing] money they do not have to spend on thing that we do not need! So, I think everyone is at fault!

I don’t get why people are arguing with the facts of this video.
It is quite logical, You spending money on things you don’t need with money you don’t have is harmful and wasteful.
You don’t need a limo and you don’t need to renovate you backyard with a pool when you’re in so much debt.
Simple logic.
