I need to get a FREE version of an antivirus software for my computer, and I was wondering if anyone knew what Consumer Reports said was the best one, or if anyone has any suggestions…
The Best Free Security protection is:
Comodo Pro (firewall) and AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
More user friendly option:
ZoneAlarm (firewall) simpler to use and requires less setting up then Comodo Pro
All available from download.com
I recently removed my McAfee firewall and installed Comodo Pro, its the best firewall I’ve ever used and comes top in leaktests (see below) if after installing Comodo you get too many warnings turn the defence + setting to clean computer or off, its has nothing to do with the firewall part of Comodo it simply monitors system changes.

Would also recommend that you use a safer browser like Mozilla Firefox.

Download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is Malwarebytes..
You can run any realtime anti-spyware program with an anti-virus program and it will not conflict. Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware works well with AVG, provided that you get the free version, which doesn’t have real-time protection. There’s a chance of bad interactions with AVG if MBAM’s real-time protection is turned on. Install the free version, then update it and run scans occasionally.

Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on – when searching for something using yahoo, google or msn, it displays either a green tick (safe site), yellow exclamation mark (use with care) or a red cross (dangerous site) next to every result.

Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date – frequent patches are released to plug security holes.
(Don’t use AntiVir, some people recommended Avira AntiVir to me so I removed AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition and installed AntiVir but I could not get it to update, the forums are full of people having the same problem)
Hope That Helps!
