What was the high octane rating for auto fuel in 1977 and was this unleaded?

Pretty much the same as today as far as available octane ratings. 87 to 91 is pretty standard, but certain stations in certain regions might have as low as 85, or as high as 92 or 93 or even higher.

Way back when, higher octane used to be called Ethyl.

It made for some good dirty jokes about "pumping Ethel".

Unleaded gas was phased in fairly rapidly starting in 1973.

Sunoco 260 was the highest octane available on the street. 104 Octane. It was not unleaded. The only unleaded gas available at that time was sold by Amoco.
