I know the cost of commercials is determined by the length and the ratings but why do good shows cancel even with a high rating. Wolverine and the X-Men had an average of 3,000,000 viewers. So why is it canceling? They reported about financial issues but the show must have made a lot of money from its first season.

Sometimes the producers have conflicts and stop the show. The ratings may be high, but maybe from the so many people who watch it. A 5 star hotel rated by 10 people is not greater than a 4.5 star hotel rated by 500 people. It may be equal.

They aren’t about to eat up past profits to support a show that is losing money unless they have a strong indication that needed revenue will be generated further down the line. If they have the viewership but don’t have the advertisers and don’t appear to be getting them anytime soon, then it is a matter of throwing good money after bad. So they cut their losses instead of hoping for a miracle turnaround which will become stable.
